It took the village of Orta San Guilio yesterday to get us out of a bind when the car's satellite navigation system sent us onto a one way street and into the path of oncoming traffic.

After a dramatic and heartwarming introduction to Italy this trip, we checked into Piccolo Hotel Olina.

A stroll around this quaint town in Piedmont revealed clusters of pastel-coloured buildings.

Winding cobblestoned laneways.

Jerrie: You have lost a considerable amount of weight since we have been in Italy.

Nigel: This is probably from carrying your oversized luggage up the stairs.

And the Piazza Mario Motta square of shops and restaurants overlooking Lake Orta and its island Isola San Guilio with the notable Basilica di San Giuilio.

Dinner was at Ristorante Venus with a table for two on the terrace, an uninterrupted view of Lake Orta and Isola San Giulio.

Primi piatti included Saccotto di Branzino, Burro Salato e Semi di Sesa mo Tostati or Sea Bass Ravioli, Salted Butter and Toasted Sesame Seeds.

Before continuing to Mantova in Italy today, breakfast at Pic nic comprised local delicacy Torta di Semolino or Semolina Cake.
